In 1919 Luise Zweygart inherited the food department of his wholesale company in Böblingen from her father. Her husband Emil Kriegbaum expanded the business by opening more retail stores.

In 1996/1997, the Kriegbaum company, which until then had only been present in southern Germany, opened four department stores in Berlin, one in Potsdam and one in Leipzig.

Most recently, a total of 96 department stores, grocery and hardware stores were operated under the name Multi-Center (formerly a self-service hall ), Multi-Markt , Multi-City , Vorteil-Kauf , Topkauf , Top-Baucenter and EKZ . The Kriegbaum Group employed 5650 people.

On March 1, 1998, Richard Kriegbaum, Emil Kriegbaum's grandson, sold the company to Metro AG for an estimated DM 1.2 billion (€ 613 million) . The Böblingen company headquarters was dissolved in 1999, the department stores were renamed real and the pure grocery stores were renamed extra . The DIY stores, some of which were still called Top-Bau for a while , others were renamed Extra Bau + Hobby , then belonged to the Praktiker DIY group until it was closed .
