Fermersleben war memorial

The war memorial Fermersleben is in Magdeburg district Fermersleben befindliches war memorial .

It stands west of the main street Alt Fermersleben , near the confluence with Friedrich-List-Straße and is a reminder of the residents of Fermersleben who died in World War I. The first plans to erect a war memorial took place in February 1934. The war memorial was erected in 1934 on the former Fermersleben cemetery, which was abandoned in 1931. At the beginning of the 19th century there was the Fermersleben post mill .

It was financed by the Protestant parish of Fermersleben . The construction was carried out by the contractor Ernst Mohrlüder . The Magdeburgische Zeitung reported in detail on the ceremonial inauguration of the monument, which took place on September 16, 1934 .

The memorial is simple but monumental in design. A stele with a square floor plan rises in the middle of a wall. On the front of the stele there is a cross reminiscent of a sword . The lettering DEN GEFALLEN SÖHNEN VON FERMERSLEBEN runs below the top of the wall . On the left side there are two, on the right side three panels with the names of the deceased in alphabetical order. On the sides of the stele were originally the names of major battles of the First World War. The base area carried an iron cross as a relief . Both were removed after World War II .

The monument is of cultural and historical interest, as a modern architectural language was rededicated here for the heroic war cult of the Nazi era .

In summer 2012, the five plaques with the names of the deceased were stolen by strangers, presumably non-ferrous metal thieves. On the occasion of the renovation of the monument in 2015, stone tablets with the names of the fallen replaced the stolen bronze tablets.
