The war memorial in the Weichs cemetery

The Weichs war memorial is a memorial in memory of the residents of the parish of Weichs , who fell against France in the wars of unification in 1870/71 .

It was inaugurated on Whit Monday 1899 by the local warrior and soldier association, which had been founded five years earlier, in the form of a Marian column. On the front there is an embedded granite slab with the words “In memory of the warriors who fell in the battles against France between 1870 and 1871”, followed by a list of those who fell . The names of the soldiers who returned from the war are listed on the right-hand side of the monument. After the last name, the year 1866 was given, which refers to the war that took place that year between Bavaria and Prussia as part of the German War .

In 1922 a second war memorial was inaugurated in Weichs, which was to commemorate the fallen of the First World War 1914–1918 . A place was chosen for this in the center of the village - the current intersection of Münchner and Freiherrn and Freisinger Strasse. The memorial showed a soldier with a steel helmet and a rifle, kneeling down in prayer. In 1973, however, the statue had to be moved to the grounds of the cemetery because the volume of traffic had risen sharply. The memorial is still there today and only the stone soldier reminds of the memorial at that time.

In 2002, a redesign of the war memorial was planned, consisting of the soldier sculpture, plaques with all the names of those who fell and missing from Vistula, and a memorial stone for those who were expelled from their homeland . The new monument was to be placed on a step 15 cm higher. However, the plans failed because of the monument protection authority , which presented a new plan that the community had to accept. There was only a renovation of the monument, no extensions were made.
