history

Twelve Russian and three Belgian prisoners of war from the First World War from the prison camps Parnewinkel and Haßel, who died mainly due to the poor accommodation, food and hygiene conditions, are buried at the Parnewinkel war cemetery.

With the establishment of the prisoner-of-war camp Stalag XB Sandbostel in 1939, the camp cemetery in Parnewinkel was used again for the burial of prisoners of war. 18 Serbs, 13 Poles, twelve members of the Red Army, three Belgians and one Chinese are buried in individual graves. About 40 Soviet prisoners of war were buried in a mass grave.

From 1941 a new camp cemetery was set up in Sandbostel .

After the end of World War II were on the former camp cemetery in Parnewinkel reburials made. Grave services from France, Belgium and Great Britain exhumed the bodies of prisoners of war from their respective nations and transferred them to their home countries.

As at the Sandbostel war cemetery, memorial events take place at the Parnewinkel war cemetery.
