The war cross ( Greek Πολεμικός Σταυρός Polemikos Stavros ) was donated in three stages by King George II of Greece on November 11, 1940 and awarded to members of the Greek armed forces who were involved in military actions against the occupation by Italian armed forces and the German armed forces during of the Second World War and made merit in the later liberation of the country. Foreign nationals can be awarded as long as they meet the requirements.

Order decoration

The medal is a paw cross made of bronze that is surmounted by a crown and crossed swords lead through the cross angles. The mirrored and crowned Greek initial Γ (George) can be seen in the medallion . The reverse of the cross is smooth and only shows the embossed year 1940 in the center .

Carrying method

The award is worn on a red ribbon with a wide blue central stripe on the left side of the chest.

Others

If the award is repeated, the crown above the cross is made of silver (2nd level) or gold (1st level). After the abolition of the monarchy, the war cross is awarded without a crown. Instead, the medallion is in gold, silver or bronze depending on the level and shows the coat of arms of Greece .
