Appearance

Front of a criminal service stamp

The badge is an oval brass disc , which is 60 mm wide, 42 mm high and 3 mm thick. On the front, the word “KRIMINALPOLIZEI” is written in two lines and without a hyphen - which is actually required in spelling - and a police star (without the state coat of arms) is shown. The issuing agency and the federal or state coat of arms are shown on the back . In addition, a number is stamped on this page.

The words “Federal Republic of Germany” are embossed in block letters on the circumferential edge of the criminal service stamp.

history

ID badge of the Essen Railway Criminal Police 1946 to 1953
Uniform federal ID badge of the search service of the Deutsche Bundesbahn 1974 to 1992

The origin is the legitimation medal of the Royal Prussian Policei officials . The tasks of the former Criminal Investigation were the beginning of the 19th century in the Prussian police regulations established. Even in the Weimar Republic and during National Socialism , the Gestapo and the criminal police had badges.

From 1954, the oval criminal service stamp, which is still in use today , was introduced to the police forces of the federal states and the Federal Criminal Police Office .

Corresponding brands were also used by the railway police , but initially until 1953 in a round version with the inscription "Bahnkriminalpolizei", the name of the issuing railway directorate and the impeller on the back. Later this brand was uniformly designed nationwide, was given a round shape from 1953 to 1974 with the inscription "Fahndungsbeamter der Deutsche Bundesbahn " and the service number, from 1974 the oval shape with the inscription "Fahndungsdienst Deutsche Bundesbahn" and the federal eagle on the front and back the police star, the sign of the Federal Railroad and the stamped service number on the back. With the dissolution of the Federal Railroad in 1992 this brand disappeared.

Furthermore, similar brands with the appropriate inscription are used for tax investigations and customs .

function

The stamp usually secured on a chain (in connection with the police ID card) is used by the police officers of the criminal police to identify themselves as police officers despite the lack of a uniform, whereby in some federal states the number of the ID is identical to the number of the ID. The badge alone is not sufficient legitimation.

Legal

The badges are handed over to the enforcement officers by the competent authority (e.g. Federal Criminal Police Office, State Criminal Police Office), but remain the property of the respective authority and must be returned when leaving the service. Offers of these official stamps can therefore fall under theft , embezzlement or stolen goods . A register is kept of the issuing of the criminal service stamps by the competent issuing authority. Lost criminal service stamps are regularly advertised for search purposes .

Individuals who claim to using counterfeit official stamps as their owner, also make the official presumption punishable, could be added other crimes such as abuse of titles, job titles and badges or forgery , in particular in fake ID card.

Austria

Cockade of the Austrian Federal Police

In Austria , a round metal badge is also referred to as a cockade, which is used by the federal police officers in the criminal service for legitimation. It bears the inscription "Federal Police Criminal Service". In the Federal Criminal Police Office , cockades with the inscription “Federal Criminal Police Office Austria” are in use. Cockades with the same design do not only exist in the criminal service, as can be seen from the various inscriptions:

• "Federal Police"

• "Federal Police Higher Service"

• "Federal Police Chief Detective Officer"

• "Federal Police Survey Service"

• "Federal Police Higher Medical Service"

• "Republic of Austria Federal Police Directorate"

• "State Office for the Protection of the Constitution"

• "LPD Vienna Security Office"

• "LPD Linz Security Office"

• "LPD Graz Security Office"

• "Security service professional detective"

• "Republic of Austria bailiff"

They mark officials of the legally qualified service authorized to exercise direct command and coercive power , the chief physicians, public medical officers and other specially authorized officials.

The diameter of the current cockade is 5 cm, it is enamelled, has a fastening clip on the back and is used in an ID card folder with a necklace or for fastening with a button on the belt. Behind the ID card folder is a compartment with a window for the ID card.

The diameter of the old cockades was about 4.7 cm with a strap attachment on the back, which was worn on a leather strap and to prevent loss on a chain.

It sometimes happens that an older version of the cockade is also handed over to the new official on duty.

Switzerland

Badge of the Zurich canton police

In Switzerland today only ID cards are used. The badges previously used by various cantonal and city police forces were not only worn by criminal police officers, but also by civil security police officers.
