The underwater statue of Kristu tal-Baħħara (2014)

Kristu tal-Baħħara ( maltes .; German : "Christ for the seafarers") is an underwater statue of Jesus Christ , which was erected two kilometers off the coast of Malta at a depth of 35 meters. It was made from fiberglass by the Maltese sculptor Alfred Camilleri Cauchi and covered with concrete. Cauchi was commissioned by a diving group led by Raniero Borg to carry out this work in honor of Pope John Paul II's visit to Malta in 1990. The statue was modeled after the bronze statue of Cristo degli abissi in San Fruttuoso , Italy. It is one of its many copies worldwide. It weighs around 13 tons.

The statue was originally sunk in the sea in 1990 near Gżejjer ta 'San Pawl (literally: "Island of St. Paul", English: St. Paul's Islands), Malta. After ten years, because of the poor visibility in the water and a decrease in the number of divers who visited it, it was moved from there to the sea in front of Qawra , a district of the city of San Pawl il-Baħar (German: "Sankt Paulus Bucht", English: St. Paul's Bay). The statue was sunk near the wreck of the Imperial Eagle , which sank in 1999 and is also a draw for divers.
