The Cristo degli abissi
San Fruttuoso Bay

The Cristo degli abissi (German: Christ of the Abyss ) is a bronze statue that was placed on the seabed in the bay of San Fruttuoso , Liguria in 1954 . The statue of Christ is located at a depth of 15 meters within the Portofino marine reserve .

history

The idea of the statue goes back to Duilio Marcante , who initiated this project in memory of Dario Gonzatti, who died in a diving accident in 1950. On August 22, 1954, the statue of Christ was erected in the immediate vicinity of the Abbey of San Fruttuoso , between the parishes of Camogli and Portofino . The Italian Navy was involved in the sinking at a depth of 17 meters .

The statue is about 2.5 meters high and was made by the sculptor Guido Galletti . The hands of Jesus are directed towards the surface of the sea in the sign of peace.

Various medals , ship elements (propellers of submarines of the US Navy ) and church bells were melted down for the bronze . After Marcante's death, a memorial plaque was placed on the base of the statue.

In 2003 the Cristo degli abissi was restored and on July 17, 2004 it was erected on a new foundation at a shallower depth.
