The Krone Töss was a hotel in Winterthur - Töss . It stood at the entrance to the village on the left bank of the Töss next to the former Kronenbrücke. In 1964 the building had to give way to the construction of the A1 motorway .

history

In 1828 the veterinarian Heinrich Ernst from Winterthur built the building of the Krone Töss in the then still independent municipality of Töss. From 1828 the Krone was run as an inn. In the cadastral plan, this designation as an inn is documented in 1832, from 1840 onwards there is talk of an inn with a wooden head and four pigsties.

However, the Gasthaus Krone only got its striking appearance through an expansion in 1897, when the former Gasthaus Krone was connected to another apartment block by a connecting building. This was carried out by the Winterthur master builder Josef Basler. The new Krone now had a larger kitchen, 14 hotel rooms, a bowling alley, meeting rooms, a social hall and a stately event hall with a stage and a gallery with 450 seats. In addition to the previous restaurant, there was also a garden restaurant with the Kronen Garden. As a result of the renovation, the building was of great importance for the Tössem clubs and was used as an event location. The Winterthur city orchestra and various choirs gave concerts there, TV Töss held evening entertainment and international cycling tournaments were held in the large ballroom . The year the Krone was rebuilt was also the year when the Töss Dramatic Society was founded, which held a theater performance once a year in the Krone Töss hall. The Schwingklub Winterthur was founded in 1902 in the Krone restaurant . Later another apartment block was attached to the building on the north side and a gas station was added on the south side.

The end of the crown was heralded in 1959 when it was foreclosed due to the high debt and failed renovation plans of the previous owner and went under the hammer for CHF 378,000 (today, adjusted for inflation, this would be CHF 1,463,094). A year later, the new owner sold the Krone to a furniture company from Zurich, which used the large hall for a furniture exhibition from 1962, while the restaurant in the basement was operated until July 1963. In 1964 the house was bought by the Canton of Zurich because it stood in the way of the construction of the new A1 motorway. In March 1965 the building was blown up by an air raid company as part of a military exercise .
