Kronenburgerpark
The Kronenburgerpark is a park on the edge of the center of the Dutch city of Nijmegen ( German Nijmegen ). The park is close to the main train station and the Lange Hezelstraat shopping street . At the point where the park borders the park path , remains of the medieval city wall and the Kruittoren ( German powder tower ) can be found.
In the park there is a stone statue of a lion that was donated by the Nijmegen Beautification Association in 1886. The work comes from Henri Leeuw sr. (Leeuw = German lion ) and his son Henri Leeuw jr. The sculpture is now under monument protection as a Rijksmonument . The lion, over two meters high, consists of Savonnières on a two-meter high base. The seated lion has opened its mouth and turned its head to the left. Its tail runs forward along its left hind leg. A cartouche between the legs shows the coat of arms of the city with the double-headed eagle.
In the lower part of the park there is a two-part pond separated by a bridge.
In the upper part of the park there is a small children's playground and a small zoo. Fallow deer and Dutch country goats as well as peacocks and chickens live in the zoo . There are also guest animals , especially in summer . In 2012, two Poitou donkeys could be admired and in 2013 a small herd of Ouessant sheep visited the zoo.
