The Poitou donkey (French: Baudet du Poitou ) is an endangered breed of large donkey named after the Poitou area (in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region ) in western France.

The breed has been known since the 11th century, but probably originated earlier. It was common in south-west France. Today there are only a few pure breeds left.

The stallions have a Height cm of 140 to 150, the mares are 135 to 145 cm high. The Poitou donkey looks massive and often has a long, shaggy coat that is usually dark brown. The mouth, the rims of the eyes and the belly are white-gray, with a reddish shade as a transition to the dark brown fur, which can sometimes also have a light brown shade.

The breed was mainly bred for field work and used in crossings with the Poitevin to breed unusually large mules and used here for military purposes. Nowadays Poitou donkeys are sometimes shown in zoological gardens; in Germany you can z. B. in the Cologne Zoo , in the Tierpark Berlin , in the Tierpark Hamm , in the Tiergarten Heidelberg , in the Wilhelma in Stuttgart, in the Tierpark Hagenbeck , in the Tierpark Niederfischbach, in the Tiergarten Nuremberg , in the game reserve Hellenthal , in the animal park Mundenhof near Freiburg, in the wildlife park Lüneburg Heath in Nordhorn zoo , in the pet park Werdum , in the Tiergarten Kleve , in the zoo Weeze and Tierpark Arche Warder see. Some of the donkeys also live in the Steveraue nature reserve in Olfen and in the Asinerie Cleeberg in Central Hesse. There is also breeding there.
