Crown winder

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A crown winder is an auxiliary tool that is assigned to precision mechanics and is used for winding mechanical wristwatches with a manual winding mechanism . With watches of this type, it can be the case that the case and crown are damaged by abrasion during manual winding over a longer period of time. In addition, older watches in particular sometimes have relatively small and therefore difficult to grasp crowns. Both problems are countered by using a crown winder.

A crown winder is mostly made of metal , less often of plastic , has a tubular shape and, by means of a spring mechanism, encloses the crown with an annular gripper. By turning around the longitudinal axis, the winding of the movement can be handled more comfortably and in a more gentle manner.
