The Krupper , also known as a trailer ( French croupiere Bacul ) are a protective weapon from Europe. It protects a horse's croup .

description

The krupper are made of various materials, including leather and steel . They are used to protect the croup of a horse from blows and stings. The shape, design and choice of materials depends on the respective place of origin and the age of manufacture. The first krupper were made of leather, similar to the type used by several races of the North American Indians . These hardly had a real protective function, but were supposed to protect the horse with the help of magical powers. In other countries, krupper made of thick cowhide leather , which was also often hardened by cooking, were used. In later times they were made of steel, and these too can vary greatly in their design. There are croupers that only lie on top of the croup, or they also protect the croup and both sides down to the legs. They were either simply designed or worked out into pompous designs with pictorial representations. The more valuable versions were often refined with engravings or editions made of precious metals ( silvering , gilding ). They also served to better secure the saddle , since the croupers run around the horse's tail with leather straps.
