Kuştul Monastery

The Kuştul Monastery ( Turkish Kuştul Manastırı , Greek Ιερά Μονή του Αγίου Γεωργίου Περιστερεώτα ) is located near the village of Şimşirli in the Maçka district of the Trabzon Province in Turkey . It was founded in 752 about 30 km southeast of the city of Trabzon and closed on January 17, 1923, as the monks were expelled to Greece along with other Pontic Greeks .

The Greek name of the monastery is Saint Georgios Peristereotas. The name is derived from the monk Peristereotis ( peristeri means dove in Greek). Legend has it that a flock of pigeons descended from the forests of Sourmena and led three monks who carried the icon of Saint George to the place where the monastery was built.

During its heyday, the monastery consisted of 187 cells and a large library that contained over 7,000 volumes. In 1203 and after 450 years of continuous use, the monastery was abandoned and no monk lived in it for two centuries. In 1398 the Emperor of Trebizond Manuel III. granted permission to reopen the monastery. In 1462 the monastery was partially destroyed when thieves and looters stole many of the heirlooms. Many possessions were also lost during the 1483 fires. In 1501 the monastery was placed under the jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Constantinople and was used until the beginning of the 20th century. It was restored after a fire in 1906. The monastery was evacuated again in 1922 and its inmates were expelled from Turkey to the Kingdom of Greece in 1923 . The monastery was abandoned, ruins are still preserved today.

A monastery of the same name was inaugurated on June 16, 1978 in Naousa , Imathia , which is also the place where the monks of the Kuştul Monastery are buried.
