Mess
Kuddelmuddel (the or that) is colloquially used in the broader sense onomatopoeically for general confusion or confusion .
The origin of the word is not clear. Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Wander (1870) sees the origin in Pomerania, Küpper (1997) and Kluge (1995) assume a Low German origin. The word muddeln comes from the Low German dialectal form Modder ("Moder").
The onomatopoeic word combination "Kuddelmuddel" very likely spread from Berlin in the middle of the 19th century. In the literary language, Thomas Mann uses it in his short story Die verauschte Köpfe (1940).
