The Kuhlohorn (also Kuhlo-flugelhorn) is a wide-scaled flugelhorn , traditionally in B-tuning. As a brass instrument , it is blown with a deep kettle mouthpiece . Its oval shape and an integrated, mostly conical tuning slide are striking.

history

For Johannes Kuhlo , the desired sound of a trombone choir was shaped by his a cappella ideal. He therefore preferred instruments ( horns , tubes ) with a wide gauge over trumpets and recommended them to his wind players. In collaboration with the Bielefeld instrument maker Ernst David , he realized the development of this instrument between 1893 and 1908.

Kuhlo writes about the property of these flugelhorns:

“Because of their soft, full, melodic tone they come closest to the human voice after the trumpet and, since they present fewer difficulties than this, are the most indispensable for us ... and the more similar an instrument sounds to the human voice, the more perfect it is and to rate the higher. The flugelhorns belong to the horns (mostly in b), they are the nightingales in the soprano of brass music. "

Using the instrument in jazz

Michael T. Otto discovered the Kuhlohorn for jazz in the 21st century and made it famous. Corresponding recordings are available.
