Kukiya

Kukiya , also called Bentyia , is a place on an island in Niger , 150 kilometers downstream from Gao in present-day Mali, immediately before the border with Niger .

In the 14th century, Kukiya was the place where the Sonni from Gao had withdrawn from the overwhelming power of the Mali allied Za . Numerous steles with Arabic inscriptions still bear witness to the historical importance of Kukiyas, some of which are dated to the end of the 13th century.
