The Doulos is a former cargo and passenger ship. She was until 2010 the oldest moving offshore - passenger ship in the world. Until 2010 it belonged to the Christian missionary organization Good Books for All and was used as a traveling bookstore . In the course of time it went under the names Medina , Roma , Franca C and Doulos Phos . In 2016 the ship was put ashore in Bintan and converted into a hotel.

history

Medina

Medina on its maiden voyage

The medina was built in 1914 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company for the Mallory Steamship Company in the United States . The steamship was named after a river in Texas , as was her sister ship, the Neches, built in 1914 and sunk off Devon (England) after a collision in 1918 . She was an Atlantic freighter, which in 1914 was considered one of the most modern and largest cargo ships on the US east coast. During the Second World War she served in the American Coast Guard off the Pacific coast.

Roma

The Panamanian organization Naviera San Miguel SA bought the medina in 1948, named the ship Roma and converted it into a passenger ship with cabins for 287 passengers and dormitories for a further 694 people. In the Catholic jubilee year 1949/1950 the Roma made four pilgrimages from South America to Europe. Then she was used as an emigration ship to Australia .

Franca C.

In 1952, Naviera San Miguel sold the Roma to Linea Costa , an Italian company. At that time that was Roma from a steamship to a motor vessel rebuilt and, according to the tradition of Costa to name the ships after a family member in Franca C. renamed. With a capacity of over 900 people, it carried passengers between Italy and Argentina . In 1959 the Franca C. was converted into a first-class cruise ship, which mainly sailed in the Mediterranean region . She was later one of the first ships to cruise to Miami . In 1970 the main drive was changed again, a FIAT V18 cylinder for operation with medium-heavy marine diesel oil .

Doulos

The Doulos moored in the harbor (2007)

In 1977 the mission company Operation Mobilization (OM) took over Franca C. and renamed it Doulos , after the Greek word for "servant, slave". Good books for everyone (GBA) was founded as the operator . Since then, the Doulos has been manned by a volunteer crew and has visited ports all over the world as a bookshop. With the Logos Hope, OM is now operating another ship with the same objective. As the predecessor of Logos Hope , two more ships ( Logos and Logos II ) were operated one after the other .

In August 1991 , an attack on crew members of the Doulos was carried out in Zamboanga , Philippines , in which Sofia Sigridsson from Sweden and Karen Goldsworthy from New Zealand lost their lives and 32 other people were injured, some seriously. The terrorist group Abu Sajaf was responsible for the attack .

From May to November 1993 the entire electrical system of the Doulos was renewed and switched from direct current to alternating current . Over 70 km of electrical cables and over a hundred DC motors were replaced. To replace the generators, the ship was brought into dry dock and the ship's side was opened under the waterline. Thanks to the work of around 170 volunteers, the free use of the shipyard facilities and the waiver of port fees by the Cape Town Port Authority , the renovation costs remained below 1.5 million US dollars.

Since the Doulos does not meet the more stringent SOLAS conditions that will become mandatory from 2010 , further service beyond 2009 was called into question. In order to meet the requirements, the historic features have made of wood (the bridge z. B. is with the exception of the steering wheel , which was replaced with a modern drive lever in its original state from 1914) must be exchanged for fire safety reasons. The financial expense could not be met by the owner. Since the more stringent SOLAS conditions only apply to passenger ships with more than 36 passengers, it was hoped that OM would be able to continue operation by having the OM employees on board not as passengers as before, but as crew after completing the necessary training would be classified. However, this turned out to be financially unsustainable due to the nonetheless incurred financial expenses of over € 10 million.

The Doulos was therefore stopped on December 31, 2009. The "MV Doulos Preservation Campaign" had already been launched beforehand in order to preserve the Doulos beyond 2010. The aim was to convert the Doulos into a hotel, a tourism center or a museum ship, or to continue to operate it as a super luxury yacht. For a long time, this was considered the only way for the Doulos to retain their Guinness Book of Records title as “The world's oldest ocean going motor passenger liner” . In the meantime, consideration was given to scrapping the ship in India , and on February 4, 2010 the organization OM announced that the ship would be scrapped in India.

Ultimately, however, the Doulos was sold to the Singapore-based BizNaz Resources International Pte Ltd , which it intends to use as a floating tourist attraction in the Singapore harbor. For this purpose, the ship was renamed Doulos Phos (German "Servant of Light").

Doulos

In September 2013 the ship was renamed Doulos again .
