The Kulikalon Lakes are located in northwest Tajikistan, not far from the border with neighboring Uzbekistan . The lakes are located at an altitude of around 2800 meters in the Kulikalon Depression , which is surrounded by significantly higher mountain peaks. The landscape in the valley is characterized by juniper forests and overgrown hills. Due to the natural beauty of the Kulikalon Lakes and the surrounding area, the landscape is suitable for extended hikes, but has only been used to a very limited extent due to the poor accessibility of the region.

description

Three different lakes are summarized under the term Kulikalon lakes. They differ greatly in their size and shape, but lie next to each other and are connected by small streams and watercourses. The lakes are fed by meltwater from the nearby Tschimtarga glacier , which flows into the depression via two small rivers from the north and south, where it flows into the lakes. The river Artuch forms the drain of the Kulikalon lakes. Due to the increasing inflow of meltwater, the water levels in the lakes rise in the summer months and fall again in winter.

The largest of the three lakes is framed by the surrounding mountainous landscape, on its northern bank the rock formations form bays and rocky outcrops on the edge of the lake. In the south, rugged cliffs shape the appearance of the shore landscape.

use

The lakes and the surrounding plains are popular with the few hikers who come to the region. In addition, the Kulikalon Lakes are an important meeting point for the shepherds from the surrounding villages, who bring their animals here and graze on the banks of the lakes. Some of the shepherds in the area around the Kulikalon Lakes also go to their summer camp.

Birds

The lakes are also of special importance for birds, which live here in large numbers. The Kulikalon Lakes are designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by the organization BirdLife International , as more than 160 species of birds can be seen here.
