The Kulturhaus EmailWerk is an event and production facility for contemporary art and culture in Seekirchen am Wallersee .

history

In 1921, the trained blacksmith and locksmith Anton Windhager founded a company in Seekirchen, now known as Windhager AG. It specialized in the production of pressure vessel stoves, electric stoves and bread baking stoves. For the manufacture of these products, a factory was built in the center of Seekirchen, which was operated as the "enameling factory" until the 1970s. This technique for refining metallic surfaces was an innovative and common process at the time. The historic factory building has been used as a warehouse for the past few decades.

In 2001 Verena and Leo Fellinger developed the “Regionales Kulturhaus” project and won a state award. In 2005, the building (at that time still owned by the Windhager company) was rented on a long-term basis by the Kunstbox cultural association and redesigned into a center for contemporary art and culture with funds from the State of Salzburg, the city of Seekirchen and the EU regional funding program LEADER. The design and naming were based on the use as a culture and event center, the name takes up the historical background of the building and its importance in the history of Seekirche. The meaning of the name "EmailWerk" (enamelling = refinement) is intended to reflect the content-related concern of implementing new and innovative cultural work on the foundations of traditional culture. There was controversy in 2007 when the high cost of the cultural center to the city was criticized.

In 2011 the municipality of Seekirchen acquired the enamel factory from the Windhager company in order to secure the location of the Emailwerk culture house and thus the role of contemporary cultural work in the Salzburg lake area for the future.

Focus

The initiative to found it came from the KunstBox cultural association with the aim of producing contemporary art in non-urban areas outside the city of Salzburg. The enamel factory is a "multi-branch house", it organizes different art movements (theater, literature, music, dance and fine arts), whereby the differentiating features have developed in the first five years:

  • The examination of the history and landscape of the Salzburg lake area takes place on two levels. In the field of literature, two scholarships are awarded annually in order to continue the tradition of writing at Wallersee, which flourished with the writers Carl Zuckmayer (1934–1938), Alice Herdan-Zuckmayer (1934–1938), and Ödön von Horváth (1936–1937 ) and Thomas Bernhard (1935–1937). These grants have already resulted in two publications by Otto Müller Verlag and a literary guide (written by Silvia Bengesser) for the documentation and preparation of the literary past of the Salzburg Lake District for citizens. In the field of fine arts, Landart works of art are created in the landscape of the lake area in cooperation with Landart artists and sculptors, and workshops for adults and children are carried out.
  • Acappella and vocal music is implemented both as a year-round theme, as well as with focus festivals and training courses for singers.
  • Another focus is the annual implementation of Creative Children's Days , where the main focus is on activating and stimulating creativity in children and students.
  • Since 2013 the association has been working intensively on the development of a concept for a "House of Language", a language museum. A feasibility study was drawn up and presented to the public, a sample exhibition entitled "SprachLust" was shown in Seekirchen (Emailwerk) in 2014 and in the Salzburg City Library in 2015.

The Kulturhaus EmailWerk has an event room for 155 visitors, a bar in the foyer and is barrier-free. In 2013 around 13,000 visitors attended a total of 283 cultural events and workshops; in 2007 there were 8,000 visitors at 100 events.

Awards

  • The founding team of the Kulturverein Kunstbox received the "Innovation Prize of the City of Seekirchen" for the concept of "Regional Cultural Work" in 2000.
  • The Kulturverein KunstBox and the Kulturhaus Emailwerk were awarded the "Salzburg State Prize for Cultural Work 2011". With this, the jury recognized the fact that culture is created in the Kulturhaus Emailwerk, that incentives are set for the further development of artists and art branches and that Seekirchen is thus at the center of international developments.
  • The cultural association Kunstbox and the municipality of Seekirchen have been awarded the title “Cultural Location of the Province of Salzburg 2013” by the State of Salzburg.
