The Kulturhaus Osterfeld is a cultural center in the city of Pforzheim (Baden-Württemberg), Osterfeldstrasse 12. It was opened on September 2, 1994 in the Osterfeld building and is located in the former largest elementary school in the state of Baden , which was designed by the then city architect Alfons Kern was built in the years 1904 to 1907. The building is a historical monument.

The Kulturhaus Osterfeld is an event and performance location, meeting point and cooperation partner for various organizations, clubs and associations from a wide variety of areas of interest. History of the building

The building was used as a military hospital during the First World War and also during the Second World War. After 1945, the building was initially the town hall with a registry office in the west and north wings of the building. From 1948 the east wing was used as the first temporary theater in Germany. After the opening of the new town hall, this part of the building was used again for school purposes. The Pforzheim City Theater received a new house in 1987. In 1991, asylum seekers and war refugees from Romania and Yugoslavia were accommodated in the rooms. In October 1991 an arson attack with a Molotov cocktail was carried out. The rally organized by citizens on the following day had the motto Together against racism and xenophobia .

Creation of the socio-cultural center

In 1990 the initiative to set up the culture house in this building was born. With more than 12,000 hours of voluntary work and broad support from the population as well as the support association for the Kulturhaus Osterfeld eV, the house was rebuilt and handed over to its destination on September 2, 1994 during a ceremony with Mayor Joachim Becker and State Minister Brigitte Unger-Soyka . In the Kulturhaus Osterfeld in Pforzheim, the free art, culture and theater scene find scope. The program includes different branches, artistic and cultural projects as well as theater productions. Courses and get-togethers for numerous social groups and initiatives round off the wide range of possibilities offered by the cultural center. The Socioculture brand “promotes civic engagement and the creative and cultural skills of many. Every year up to 150,000 visitors and users take advantage of the activities of the cultural center. For courses, get-togethers and theater rehearsals, there are an average of 12 people per day. The annual budget of the socio-cultural centers in Baden-Württemberg is mainly supported by institutional funding and funds generated by the company itself. In terms of the funds it generates itself, the Kulturhaus scores well with just under 50%. On the expenditure side, sociocultural centers mainly incur costs for personnel, programs and operations.
