The Ruhr Kulturstiftung was founded by Berthold Beitz , the honorary chairman of the supervisory board of ThyssenKrupp AG and chairman of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation . Approval and establishment took place in 1984. The purpose of the foundation is "to give new impetus to cultural life in the Ruhr area and to set standards and goals" . It is based at Villa Hügel in Essen , where a number of exhibitions have been organized. The exhibitions are portrayed in a series of publications.

The foundation financially supported the "Photographic Documentation Archive on the History of Industrialization in the Ruhr" in the Ruhrland Museum with around 480,000 photos, slides and negatives.
