The Kulturstiftung des Landes Schleswig-Holstein was founded in 1984 as a foundation under civil law with its seat in the state capital Kiel .
The purpose of the foundation is to secure cultural assets and artefacts of outstanding importance for the state of Schleswig-Holstein and to support the development and strengthening of the state's cultural infrastructure. By law of May 30, 1995, it was converted into a foundation under public law .
Until 2011, the foundation operated the state cultural center on Gut Salzau in the Plön district .
