Kumamoto (Han)

Kumamoto ( Japanese 熊 本 藩 , -han ), also known as Higo ( 肥 後 藩 , -han ), was a Han ( fief ) in Japan in the Edo period , which existed from 1587 to 1871.

It was located in the province of Higo and covered large parts of what is now Kumamoto Prefecture with the exception of the districts of Kuma and Amakusa . The administrative seat was the Kumamoto Castle in today's Kumamoto . The Han income was measured at 520,000 koku and later 540,000 koku.
