Toyoki Kunitake ( Japanese 國 武 豐 喜 , Kunitake Toyoki ; born February 26, 1936 in Kurume , Fukuoka Prefecture ) is a Japanese chemist and materials scientist.

Kunitake received his PhD in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962 and was a post-doctoral student at Caltech . In 1963 he became an associate professor and in 1974 professor at Kyushu University .

In 1999 he became head of the Spatio-Temporal Function Materials group at RIKEN . In 2001 he became vice president of Kitakyushu University and in 2007 director of NanoMembrane Technologies.

He is President of the Kitakyushu Foundation for the Advancement of Industry, Science and Technology.

He is considered to be a pioneer in molecular self-assembly and the development of synthetic thin polymer films from two layers. The discovery that synthetic organic molecules can spontaneously build two-layer membranes like cell walls in biology was made in 1977.

In 2015 he received the Kyoto Prize . He was honored as a person of special cultural merit in 2007 , received the Japanese Chemical Society Award in 1990 and the Japanese Academy of Sciences Award in 2001 . In 1999 he received the medal on the purple ribbon , in 2011 the Order of the Holy Treasure and in 2014 the Order of Culture .
