The Nukus Art Museum (official name: State Art Museum of the Republic of Karakalpakistan , also Sawitsky Museum of Art or simply Nukus Museum ) is a state museum in Uzbekistan in Nukus , the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakistan .

It is one of the most visited museums of Uzbekistan and houses more than 85,000 exhibits.

collection

The Nukus Art Museum, which opened in 1966, is often named after its founder and first director, Igor Vitalievich Savitsky . The wide range of historical epochs, styles and individual items included in the collection goes back to the founder. In order to preserve the works of art Karakalpakistan, an extensive collection of folk art was created by him. This is complemented by contemporary art from Uzbekistan and the Russian avant-garde . Works of art by unknown and unrecognized artists from the 1920s to 1930s and the 20th century. The collection of Russian avant-garde is the world's second largest collection (after the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg ) from around 1918 to 1935.

archeology

The archaeological department of the art museum has a collection of exhibits over a period of over two thousand years, most of which come from local finds in Karakalpakistan (the focus is on the people of the Choresmians , who lived here at the time and whose research is still in its infancy).

Picture collection

The museum's famous picture collection consists of three sections:

  • Uzbek avant-garde of the 1920s-1930s,
  • Russian avant-garde of the 20th century and
  • contemporary art of Karakalpakistan.

Folk art

As a result of research by Sergei Pavlovich Tolstow , NA Baskakov, AL Melkov, TA Zhdanko, AS Morozova and others, the folk art of the residents of Karakalpakistan became the focus of scientific research. The collecting activity has already created a basis for further scientific research. The collection compiled by Igor Vitalievich Savitsky is considered to be the most complete of its kind.

Restorations

The museum has a restoration department, which is considered to be one of the most important sub-departments of the museum to ensure the proper preservation of the works of art. Great importance is attached to the training of employees and to cooperation with foreign museums and their restoration departments.

Library

The museum has a collection of over 10,000 books on oriental studies, the folk art of Karakalpakistan and many peoples of the world, other art movements, fashion and the like. a. m. in different languages.

In addition, magazines are also collected (e.g .: “The Art”, “Young Artist”, “The Folk applied Art”, “The Bulletin of Ancient History”, “Archeology and Ethnography”, “The New World”, “The Peoples Friendship ”,“ The Youth ”,“ The World of Art ”,“ The Golden Fleece ”and others) and consists of a video film collection on the history of world art. The library is freely accessible.
