Sergei Pavlovich Tolstov
Sergei Pavlovich Tolstov ( Russian Сергей Павлович Толстов ., Scientific transliteration Sergej Pavlovič Tolstov ; born 12 jul. / 25. January 1907 greg. In St. Petersburg ; † 28. December 1976 in Moscow ) was a Soviet archaeologist , ethnographer and historian.
Tolstov was born on January 25, 1907, the son of a Cossack officer in Saint Petersburg. From 1923 he studied at the Moscow State University, where he was also appointed professor of ethnology from 1939 to 1951. From 1943 to 1945 he was Dean of the Faculty of History. In 1942 he became the director of the Ethnographic Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . In 1956 he was elected a corresponding member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin , from 1969 he was an external member.
He was mainly concerned with exploring Central Asia and excavated some important places there ( Angka-Kala , Koj-Krylgan-Kala , Toprak-kala , Ayaz-Kala ).
