Copper Museum (Fischen am Ammersee)
The copper museum in the Pähler district of Fischen am Ammersee (Weilheim-Schongau district) was opened in autumn 2006 and shows over 1000 artistic copper works . They come from the private collection of the art dealer Siegfried Kuhnke, who brought them together over 45 years and now makes them available to the Kuhnke Copper Museum Foundation.
The museum is located in a renovated, listed manor in Upper Bavaria between Andechs Monastery and Dießen and shows cultural assets from over 6000 years of human history - the period from the Copper Age to modern times.
Copper was the first metal to be used in jewelry, utensils and weapons. The coppersmith's art flourished from Gothic to Art Nouveau . Since then, the industrial production of copper semi-finished products for technical and electronic products began. The collection clearly depicts these epochs of copper craftsmanship.
The most valuable, mostly fire-gilded pieces in the collection are gothic sacral devices, such as those found in church treasuries. The pieces were mostly made by goldsmiths in a complex craftsmanship. The focus is on the Central European utensils owned by the nobility , clergy and the rich bourgeoisie . Processing, shaping and decoration are shown. You will also gain insight into the use of the objects, especially in connection with the baking, cooking and eating culture of the various centuries. There is also a collection of oriental copper utensils and toys - such as doll kitchens and stoves. The copper show is complemented by themed paintings, graphics and sculptures.
