The Kurdish National Council ( Kurdish Encûmena Niştimanî ya Kurdî li Sûriyeyê , abbreviation ENKS , Arabic المجلس الوطني الكردي al-Majlis al-Watani al-Kurdi ) is an opposition alliance made up of 14 Kurdish parties in Syria . The largest member party is the Kurdistan-Syria Democratic Party . The founding of the Kurdish National Council, initially consisting of eleven Kurdish parties, goes back to an agreement in Arbil on October 26, 2011 under the mediation of Masud Barzani and thus followed the recently established establishment of the Syrian National Council (SNC).
Goals and relationship with the Arab opposition
The KNC advocates a politically decentralized form of government within the existing borders of Syria, the constitutional recognition of the Kurdish minority , the removal of discriminatory laws against Kurds and their past effects.
Ongoing differences with the SNC over the rights of the Kurds in a possible post- Assad era led to the departure of the Kurdish parliamentary group from the SNC in 2012. The last time there was physical clashes between the two camps was in July 2012 at a conference of the Syrian opposition in Cairo . Kurdish parties also accused Turkey of putting pressure on the SNC to marginalize the Kurdish issue in Syria. In view of these differences, four other Kurdish parties have joined the KNC and the total is currently 14 (as of January 2013). In November 2013, the Kurdish National Council and eleven members joined the national coalition of Syrian revolutionary and opposition forces in Istanbul .
The chair rotates at regular intervals between the chairmen of the individual parties. Tahir Sefûk is currently Chairman of the KNC (as of February 2013).
Together with the Democratic Union Party (PYD), the Kurdish National Council represents the Kurdish opposition in Syria . In a contract, again under the patronage of Masud Barzani, the KNC tried to settle its inner-Kurdish differences with the PYD. This Erbil Treaty, signed in July 2012, is intended to regulate the joint self-government of the Kurdish regions in northern Syria by the High Kurdish Committee .
