Kurit dam

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kurit Dam (Bend-e-Kurit, also: Korit) is an old dam in Iran that was built around 1350.

The masonry arch dam is located at the Tabas oasis in the Yazd province , south of Mashhad and 620 km southeast of Tehran . It was built next to several other dams during the Ilchane Mongol rule. With a height of 58 to 64 m, it was the highest on earth until around 1904, i.e. for around 550 years. Around 1850 it was increased again by 4 to 5 m to 65 m. It has a length of 27 to 28 meters. The base of the wall was repaired with bricks in 1865.

The reservoir is now completely silted up, the wall partially broken and no longer usable today.
