Kurt Bikkembergs

Kurt Bikkembergs (born August 5, 1963 in Hasselt ) is a Belgian composer , music teacher and conductor .

life and work

From 1978 Bikkembergs studied music education, choir and orchestra conducting and composition at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven , with Luc van Hove among others . There were also master classes, for example with Heinz Kratochwil . Bikkembergs has taught at the Lemmens Institute since 1986 and was or is the director of various Belgian choirs, including those of the Lemmens Institute and the Flemish Opera Choir . Since 1998 he has conducted the Capella di Voce in Leuven and since 2002 the choir of the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula (Brussels) .

Bikkembergs has created around 200 compositions so far, especially sacred music (including three oratorios and several cantatas), but also chamber and ballet music. He has been awarded several prizes, including the “Burgemeester Meyers Prijs” from the city of Hasselt (1991), the renowned “Prijs Cera-Jeugd & Muziek Vlaanderen” for his complete compositional work (1993) and in 2004 with the city's “Internationale compositieprijs” Hasselt for the choral composition “Super flumina Babylonis” .
