Kurt Ehlers

Georg Berthold Kurt Ehlers (born January 24, 1908 in Hanover , † April 19, 1972 ) was a German veterinarian and zoo director.

Life

Kurt Ehlers was born as the son of the banker in Hanover and bank director in Hildesheim Viktor Ehlers. In the winter semester of 1933/34 he began studying veterinary medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover and, like his father and uncle Karl Ehlers, who was also a veterinarian, became a member of the Corps Normannia Hanover . He received his veterinary license in 1938. In the winter semester of 1938/39 he was awarded a Dr. med. vet. PhD.

From 1953 to 1972 Ehlers was director of the animal grottos in Bremerhaven . Under his leadership, the zoo became known to a wide public. In the artificial rearing of howlers he achieved measurable successes with survival rates of 90% after initial setbacks by using herring fillets and vitamin E, A and D3 doses. In polar bear breeding he was successful with the polar bear Suse II, who had a total of 17 cubs .

From 1966 to 1968 Ehlers was President of the Association of German Zoo Directors .
