Kurt Herbert Adler , also Kurt Adler , (born March 1, 1907 in Neuhaus , Bohemia, † September 21, 1977 in Butler , (New York)) was an American conductor of Austrian origin.

life and work

Adler grew up in Vienna. He received his piano and composition training from Ferdinand Foll from Karl Weigl . At the same time he was studying musicology with Guido Adler and Robert Lach .

At the age of 20 he got his first engagement as Kapellmeister with Erich Kleiber at the Berlin State Opera. In 1929 he moved to Prague and returned to Berlin in 1932. From 1933 to 1935 he worked as a conductor at the Kiev State Opera, from 1935 to 1937 in the same position in Stalingrad. In 1938 he emigrated to the United States.

From 1938 to 1943 he conducted the Bach concerts in the New York Friendship House . He then worked as the director of the Metropolitan Opera . He has appeared as a guest conductor at operas in Mexico, Colorado and Hollywood. He organized opera anthologies for various performance purposes in the United States.
