Live and act

Scherer initially wanted to become an interior designer, but after turning to the Christian faith began studying Protestant theology at the theological seminar of the Evangelical Methodist Church (UMC) in Frankfurt. As pastor of the UMC, he worked from 1963 to 1969 in Dreieich-Sprendlingen near Frankfurt. Then he accepted an appointment to the Evangeliums-Rundfunk in Wetzlar and also headed the local UMC congregation until 1972. Initially he was editor-in-chief, took over the management of the pastoral care department in Germany in 1977 and in 1989 in Austria, Switzerland and South Tyrol. He introduced the "consultation hour" series, in which he answered questions from the listeners and took calls after the broadcast. From 1986 to 1995 he was deputy director of the mission leadership and has since been associated with the ERF as the author of pastoral articles. His radio work made him known throughout the German-speaking area and has now written almost 3,000 programs. In addition to publishing his lectures on audio media, Scherer brought out numerous books on Christian help in life and pastoral care. He also published various concept albums and conducted seminars on conflict management and biblical life. He was also co-initiator and chairman of a community for social therapeutic pastoral care, the Faith Court Cyriaxweimar near Marburg and was a guest teacher at theological seminars and Bible schools.

After a cerebral infarction in 1994 with failure of the left equilibrium nerve, Scherer took early retirement in 1995 and gave up his position as deputy director of the ERF. Until the end of November 2018 he moderated the senior radio series at ERF-Plus . He lives in Braunfels near Wetzlar.
