The Kurtheater (from 1888 Königliches Kurtheater ) is a theater building in Bad Wildbad in the Black Forest .

history

The first theater performances for the entertainment of the Wildbad bathers were given as early as the 18th century. The performances took place in various provisional theater arrangements and after completion of the Badhotel in its conversation room. After the premises had proven inadequate for the increasing number of visitors, a modest vaudeville theater was built in the spa gardens in 1864/1865 . Albert Hirsch and F. Brenner are named as builders and first owners. The building became state property in 1873.

The theater was only shown in the summer season. Its upswing began in the mid-1880s under the direction of the Saxon-Altenburg theater director Peter Liebig. Called the Royal Kurtheater since 1888 , it was expanded and redesigned in 1897/1898 according to plans by Albert von Beger . The main facade was given a representative porch. The interior was splendidly designed in the neo-baroque style. There was space for around 200 spectators in the stalls , the surrounding first tier and a small second tier.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the stage was provided with a backdrop extension. In 1928, minor modifications and repairs took place.

In 1977 the State Monuments Office classified the theater as a cultural monument of special importance "because of its scientific-documentary value and its artistic status" . The Monument Foundation Baden-Württemberg named it Monument of the Month for October 2007 .

use

In the 1960s the game was stopped and the building was used as a storage room for the spa nursery. Since then the theater has fallen into disrepair. In 1981/1982 the roof had to be sealed and parts of the interior had to be removed in order to stop further deterioration.

Committed citizens founded the Förderverein Kurtheater Wildbad e. V., who is committed to the renovation and reopening of the theater. In addition to money, there was also no sustainable usage concept. On the initiative of the association, the Rossini opera and music festival in Wildbad was set up in 1989 and has been held annually since then. But it took another 16 years before the theater could be used as a venue for the first time.

In 1999 the Kurtheater became the property of the friends' association. The renovation began in 2001. In three construction phases, the foundation was secured, the roof structure repaired and the facade restored according to the old templates. Inside, the auditorium, foyer and stage tower were restored with the historical stage technology and the side extensions were renewed. The state of Baden-Württemberg , the Monument Foundation Baden-Württemberg, the German Foundation for Monument Protection , the city of Bad Wildbad, the friends' association and other sponsors contributed to the costs of around 4 million euros .

From 2005 to 2011 events took place in the provisionally produced interior. After the restoration work was completed, the Kurtheater was reopened on July 10, 2014 with the concert performance of Rossini's opera Il viaggio a Reims .
