Kurtiella ovata is a type of mussel from the lentil mussel family(Montacutidae). with it

features

The even-folding case of Kurtiella ovata is up to four millimeters long. It is obliquely ovoid in outline. The length / height ratio is about 1.4. It is clearly elongated towards the lower front end. The housings are clearly unequal, the vertebrae, which are rolled back at an angle, are about a quarter of the length of the housing from the rear end. The anterior dorsal margin is almost straight to slightly concave; it slopes down only slightly towards the front end. The front edge appears slightly truncated by a (rounded) kink from the dorsal edge to the front edge. The transition from the front edge to the ventral edge is well rounded. The posterior dorsal margin is also almost straight to slightly concave, but drops off significantly more steeply than the anterior dorsal margin. The transition from the dorsal margin to the posterior margin is rounded. The ventral margin is clearly convexly curved.

The ligament lies internally in a wide depression under the vertebrae. In the right valve there are two diverging lateral teeth, a short anterior and a longer posterior one, both of which are clearly separated from the dorsal margin. The divergence angle is less than 90 °. There are also two diverging lateral teeth in the left valve. They are, however, extensions of the dorsal margin and also significantly shorter than in the right valve. The divergence angle of the two lateral teeth in the left valve is about 100 °. The area is clearly separated, but very narrow. The coat is not indented. The two sphincters leave only weak but large marks on the shell.

The whitish shell is thin-walled and fragile. The surface is smooth with fine growth strips parallel to the edge. The inside edge of the case is smooth. The light brown to light yellowish Prodissoconch is 440 to 500 µm long. The D-shaped Prodissoconch I has small dimples in the middle part, while the Prodissoconch II has growth lines parallel to the edge.

Similar species

The species differs from Kurtiella bidentata in that it has a brownish protoconch and the more vaulted vertebrae that lie significantly further towards the rear end. In addition, the area is clearly demarcated and the posterior dorsal margin is slightly inwardly curved. Kurtiella tumidula has similarly strongly curved vertebrae, but is more elongated than Kurtiella ovata and the vertebrae sit even closer to the posterior end.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species has so far only been found on some east Atlantic seamounts west of the Portuguese Cabo de São Vicente (37 ° 19 'N, 9 ° 13' W, 534 m), in the Gulf of Cádiz (36 ° 37 'N, 07 ° 33' W, 589 m and 36 ° 15 'N, 06 ° 52' W, 750 m), the Galicia Bank (about 42 ° N 12 ° W) and south of the Azores (Meteor Seamonts Group). Evidence is available from the west Atlantic off the coast of New Port and Martha's Vineyard, Rhode Island (USA) from 183 m and 287 m water depth. Evidence from the western Mediterranean (Alboran Sea) has proven to be an error.

The animals live on Schill in water depths of 180 to 720 meters, mostly between 200 and 400 m. So far it has not been possible to determine with which host Kurtiella ovata is associated.

Taxonomy

The taxon was described by John Gwyn Jeffreys as Montacuta ovata . Today it is added to the genus Kurtiella Gofas & Salas, 2008.
