Kurushima ( Japanese 来 島 ) is an island off the main Japanese island of Shikoku in the Seto Inland Sea .

geography

The four hectare island is located between the Takanawa Peninsula in the northwest of Shikoku and Oshima on Kurushima Strait ( 来 島 海峡 , Kurushima-kaikyō ), which connects the Hiuchi-nada and Iyo-nada marine regions , which are separated by the Geiyo Islands . Kurushima is one of the Kurushima Islands , which form the westernmost part of the Geiyo Islands.

Kurushima is located at the exit of the bay of the Hashihama port of the city of Imabari and forms the district of the city of the same name. In 2010 there were 23 people on Kurushima.

history

The remains of Kurushima Castle ( 来 島城 , Kurushima-jō ), which was built by Murakami Yoshifusa in the middle of the 15th century, are located on the highest point of the island at 42 m . It served as a base for the Murakami naval forces ( 村上 水 軍 , Murakami Suigun ) with whom they dominated the Seto Inland Sea during the Sengoku period, which was ruled by constant wars . In 1585 Yoshifusa's descendant Michifusa ruled the castle, whose family was now named Kurushima . At the beginning of the Edo period the castle was finally abandoned.

The naval forces are worshiped in Murakami Shrine ( 村上 神社 , Murakami-jinja ). The Yachihoko Shrine ( 八千 矛 神社 , ~ -jinja ) to the south of it was founded in 1186 and has encircled the kami Ōkuninushi and Jimmu - Tennō .
