The curvimeter (also Kurveometer , Kurvometer , curve knife or card knife ) is a measuring device for measuring distance in cards . It is one of the rectifying instruments and is mostly used by hikers or cyclists to determine the planned or covered route. With the attached roller wheel, you can drive down curvy stretches on the map (hence the name curvimeter).

species

Depending on the model, a distinction is made between mechanical and electronic curvimeters.

Mechanical curvimeter

In the case of mechanical devices, the rotation of the measuring wheel is transmitted mechanically to a pointer. This shows the distance traveled on a scale. When reading the distance, you have to choose the right scale for the map scale. R. Wittmann constructed the first such device in Vienna in 1875, the idea going back to Hermann von Schlagintweit . Newer devices can be reset to zero with a push button.

Electronic curvimeter

In electronic devices, the rotation of the measuring wheel is digitally processed. The scale of the map can be set from the start. In addition, a pocket calculator , a compass and a flashlight are often built in.
