The Kurwaldbahn (also Kurwaldbahn Bad Ems ) is a fully automatically controlled funicular between Bad Ems and the spa area on the Bad Emser Bismarckhöhe that was opened in 1979 .

history

The railway, which went into operation in 1979 , underwent a fundamental renovation in spring 2005 before the Rhineland-Palatinate Day for around 1.5 million euros. The first generation cars were replaced by new vehicles from the Swiss company Garaventa (Doppelmayr / Garaventa Group). The valley station is hidden behind the listed facade of a hotel and residential complex. The mountain station is on the Bismarckhöhe, a spa area with a hotel complex and Bismarck tower . The popular name of the train that is circulating among locals is Asthma Slide or Röchelexpress ( alluding to the clinics for respiratory diseases located at the mountain station).

The train runs every seven minutes between 6:15 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. and every 10 minutes from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. It is opposite the Malbergbahn, which was closed in 1979, on the other bank of the Lahn .

technology

The Kurwaldbahn is an electrically operated and fully automatically controlled funicular according to the Abt system, it is designed in meter gauge. The mountain railway's monitoring center, which is mostly occupied, is located in the mountain station. The track is attached to a steel structure, which in turn rests on 21 foundations . Each of the two wagons has wheels on one side with double-wheel flanges and opposite rollers with flange-free wheels, which allow the tongue-free turnout ( Abt's turnout ) to be driven over. The track is 220 m long and with a maximum gradient of 78% overcomes a height difference of 132 meters. The driving time is 70 seconds at a speed of 14 km / h. A maximum of 25 people can be transported in each of the two cars. Around 100,000 passengers are carried every year.
