Short number

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Short numbers , or speed dial numbers called, are in the telecommunications brief three-, four- or multi-digit numbers with a special number sequence thereby possess increased memorability.

Examples of uniform short-digit phone numbers in landline and mobile networks in Germany are:

Due to the dialing procedure used in the fixed network, it is not possible to form nationwide uniform short-digit phone numbers whose digits match the leading digits of subscriber phone numbers. For the fixed line network, these numbers have so far been viewed as uniform subscriber numbers in all 5,200 local network areas, but this is technically impossible for all of the numbers mentioned. The situation in cellular networks is different due to a different voting procedure. Subscriber numbers in cellular networks cannot be dialed without prefixing the service code and the block identifier. As a result, short-digit numbers can be created in mobile networks that begin with the same digits as the subscriber numbers used. The short-digit numbers created in this way are referred to as "abbreviated dialing numbers" .

Short numbers in Austria

In Austria, subscriber numbers that are much shorter than the others in the local network are called short numbers. Such as 2393 and later 7070 for the Linz magistrate , 535 and 585 for the major Linz companies " Chemie " and VÖEST or 878, 889 and 2801 for three Graz taxi service providers.

The majority of the emergency numbers, such as 112, 122, 128 (gas problems), 133 (police), 140 (mountain rescue), 141, 144, 147 or the car breakdown calls 120 and 123 are three-digit, but are rarely used as short numbers in Austria designated. All of them can also be reached from mobile networks without a dialing code. A four-digit short number is the health number 1450 , which can also be reached without an area code from both landline and mobile networks.

The numbers, which are also mostly short and can only be reached from the fixed network: telephone information 08 and time announcement 15, weather and up to the record of the day were designated as special services , which were usually charged like local calls. Today 1503 (time), 11811 (directory inquiries) and other special services are offered in different networks with partly different numbers and costs. These are also not assigned under short numbers.
