List of domestic dogs

The Kuvasz is a Hungarian breed of dogs recognized by the FCI ( Group 1, Section 1, Standard No. 54 ).

Origin and history

The name Kuvasz, like the dogs originally, comes from the Turkish-Asian region from the word Kawass or Kawash, which means something like armed security guard or archer. During excavations in ancient Sumer , clay tablets were found on which, in addition to economic records, similar dogs are depicted and labeled KU-AS-SA.

Kuvasz-like dogs were probably companions of the Magyars at the time of the first great migration , beginning with the Huns invading the land of the Ostrogoths in AD 375 . There is also a theory that the Kuvasz appeared in Hungary at the time when the Kyptschaks (Cumans) were absorbed into Magyarism (13th century). There are records from the time of King Matthias ( Matthias Corvinus , 1458–1490), from which it can be seen that the Kuvasz was used for wolf and bear hunts by the court and that its best specimens served as gifts to each other among the high nobility. Modern research has confirmed the close relationship of the Kuvasz to the Tibetan mastiff and, through them, the origin of the Molossians . To successfully keep wolves, bears, big cats and predators away from the herds, courage, cleverness, strength, physical agility and tenacity were required, because without this there was no survival.

description

The Kuvasz is an impressive dog with a height of up to 76 cm at the withers and a weight of up to 62 kg. In addition to the expressive face, the Kuvasz also stands out for its strong, muscular, yet elegant and thus harmonious overall appearance. The coat is usually white and mostly wavy to curly. The dark, watchful eyes and the black pigmentation on the nose and lips are also striking.

use

The Kuvasz is a Hungarian shepherd dog, specialized as a guard dog.

Anyone who is impressed by the image of the "white giant" and mainly wants to buy it for this reason is not well advised. As a herd guard dog, the Kuvasz is more of an independent guard dog. This breed has a temperament and develops best where its natural instincts of guarding and guarding need not lie. A house with a garden plot that he can guard is ideal as a hunting ground.

Under experienced guidance, you can take the companion dog test with the Kuvasz . With a correspondingly sensitive, patient training, he sometimes even shows himself to be a talented tracking and rescue dog , but will never show the proverbial obedience of a German shepherd , for example , he is too headstrong. A protection dog training and testing is currently not recommended because of this trait. The Kuvasz is characterized by a high stimulus threshold. It is important to let him get in touch with other people and dogs from the very beginning; this makes him more sociable and friendlier to the outside world, without his vigilance suffering. He is very persistent and enjoys running ten to 15 km next to his bike when it's cool, and more with appropriate training.

Legal position

The Kuvasz is on the breed list of potentially dangerous dog breeds in the Swiss canton of Ticino , and keeping it there requires a permit.
