Kyle Abraham

Kyle Abraham (born August 14, 1977 in Pittsburgh ) is an American contemporary dancer and choreographer . He is considered a master in mixing hip-hop , street dance and expressive dance .

life and work

Abraham grew up in an African American civil neighborhood in Pittsburgh. His talent for dancing , he discovered late when he a role in a high school - Musical received. He decided to pursue a career as a choreographer, although he also showed a lot of acting talent. After obtaining his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Purchase College of the State University of New York in 2000, he joined a short time for the Bill T. Jones / Arnie Zane Dance Company on. Soon afterwards he continued his studies at the Tisch School of the Arts , which he graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in 2006 . In the same year he created his solo choreography Inventing Pookie Jenkins , in which he turned masculine stereotypes upside down with alternating wild and flowing movements and an ankle-length, white skirt . In 2007, Abraham joined the choreographer David Dorfman's dance troupe .

A year earlier, Abraham founded the Ensemble Kyle Abraham / Abraham.In.Motion (A / I / M) , with which he performed many successful dances. His works deal with topics such as identity , history and community. In 2010's The Radio Show , Abraham was inspired by memories of a former black Pittsburgh radio station and interwoven with feelings that his father's illnesses caused him. For his ensemble work Pavement (“Straße”, “Pflaster”), Abraham revived the Pittsburgh of the 1990s, also drawing on John Singleton's film Boyz n the Hood (1991) and WEB Du Boi's book The Souls of Black Folks (1903). Pavement plays on a basketball court and addresses domestic and police violence as well as the brutality of street gangs in the black neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. In the piece u. a. also classical music of Johann Christian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi used. When the Wolves Came In from 2014, equipped by Glenn Ligon and with music by Robert Glasper , deals with the civil rights movements in the USA and South Africa .

In addition, Abraham choreographed for other ensembles. His repertoire for Alvin Ailey's American Dance Theater (AAADT) and Ailey II (subsidiary of AAADT) included The Corner (2010), Another Night (2012) and the last two parts of his trilogy Untitled America (2016). He also played in a duet with the New York ballet dancer Wendy Whelan . In 2013 they both performed The Serpent and the Smoke together for the first time at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival . The following year he choreographed a video for the autumn / winter collection of the fashion label rag & bone , in which he and Indigo Ciochetti offered a performance in black knitwear.

Awards

Abraham received the Bessie Award and Princess Grace Award (both 2010) , among others . In 2012 he received the Jacob's Pillow Dance Award , and in 2013 a prestigious grant from the MacArthur Foundation (“Genie Prize”). In 2016 Abraham was the winner of the Doris Duke Artist Awards .
