Kyrilla Spiecker

Kyrilla Spiecker OSB (* August 8, 1916 as Adelheid Spiecker in Berlin ; † July 25, 2008 in Herstelle ) was a German doctor , Benedictine , artist and author .

Life

Adelheid Spiecker, eldest daughter of the center politician and journalist Carl Spiecker , spent several months in solitary confinement during the Nazi era . She studied medicine in Berlin and in 1941, with her work on sources of error in the asepsis of injections, became a Dr. med. PhD . During the Second World War, she looked after forced laborers and wounded soldiers.

In 1946 she joined the order of the Benedictine Sisters in the Abbey of the Holy Cross in Herstelle , a district of Beverungen , a monastery founded in 1899 by Benedictine Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament , and took the religious name of Kyrilla. She made her profession on July 25, 1947 . From 1960 to 1965 she attended the Cologne factory schools .

Kyrilla Spiecker was best known as an author and artist of paintings, woodcuts as well as liturgical vestments and church windows. She wrote several books, including the autobiography "Tears: Nazi imprisonment - a doctor on duty - everyday life in the monastery". She was also involved in retreats and days of reflection.

She died on July 25, 2008, the 61st anniversary of her profession, in the infirmary of the Herstelle monastery.
