The Kyushu National Museum ( Japanese 九州 国立 博物館 Kyūshū Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan ) opened in 2006 in Dazaifu ( Fukuoka Prefecture , Japan ). After around ten years of preparation, after the Tokyo National Museum , the Kyōto National Museum and the Nara National Museum, this was the first such museum to be founded in over a hundred years. With its vaulted roof, which covers an area of 160 × 80 m, the impressive steel and glass construction of the building nestles into the surrounding hilly landscape.
The museum guards a rich collection of objects which the development of the island of Kyushu and its close cooperation with the Korean Peninsula and the Chinese mainland from the prehistoric Jomon until the Meiji period covered.
With its in-house conservation department, it also serves as a center for the preservation of important cultural assets in western Japan.
