The L'Hospitalet Pioners are an American football team from L'Hospitalet de Llobregat in Catalonia ( Spain ). With six national championship titles, the Pioners are the most successful team in Spain after the Badalona Dracs .

history

The Pioners were founded in 1988. The name Pioners refers to the fact that the team founded the sport of American football in Spain together with the Badalona Drags , the Barcelona Boxers and the Poblenou Búfals . In the fall of 1988, these four Catalan teams played the first edition of a Spanish league, but the Pioners could not reach the final. In the fifth attempt, the Pioners then reached the final of the Lliga Catalana for the first time, in which they were defeated by defending champion Barcelona Boxers with 18:24.

With the introduction of the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Americano in 1995, the Pioners were again among the founding members. In the fourth season, the Pioners moved into the final, which they lost 7:13 against Badalona Drags. The Pioners won their first title in 2000 when they won the Copa de España . The opponents in the final were the Badalona Drags.

The Pioners' most successful period began with the 2003 season. They were initially defeated by local rivals Badalona Drags in the 2003 and 2004 finals. In the 2005 season, these two teams met for the third time in a row in the final. This time the Pioners got the upper hand and beat the now renamed Dracs by 24:13. During this time, the Pioners also entered the international stage and from 2004 took part in the European Football League every year . In the fight against the top European teams, however, the Pioners could not keep up and until 2007 lost every game. In 2008 the Pioners celebrated their first victory in the EFL against the Thonon Black Panthers . In the same year they won their second national championship. The Pioners reached their absolute peak between 2010 and 2013, when they rose to the Spanish record champions with four championships in a row. In each of their championship years, the Pioners also celebrated victory in the Spanish Cup. In the 2013 season they were also in the final of a European competition, the EFAF Cup , for the first time . Again the opponent was Thonon, who ultimately gave the Pioners no chance in a 66: 6 win.

After this period of success, the Pioners took a steep decline. In 2014, the Pioners won their ninth cup. In the championship, however, they were eliminated in the semifinals. A year later, the Pioners even missed the play-offs. Internationally, the Pioners competed in these years, but lost all their games in the second-rate IFAF Europe Champions League in both 2014 and 2015 . At the end of the 2015 season there was relegation to the second division. In Serie B they made it to the final, which went to the Murcia Cobras with a score of 10: 8. The direct resurgence was thus missed, with which the Pioners play second class again in 2017.
