The vehicles A 02 601 and A 02 602 were diesel railcars of the forest railway Lillafüred (Lillafüredi Állami Erdei Vasút; LÁEV), with which passenger traffic was introduced there in 1929. One of the two vehicles is preserved in a museum on the Budapest Children's Railway.

history

Railcar in use on the Lillafüred forest railway (1957)

The railcars were created when motorization began on various branch lines in Hungary . The two vehicles were built by the company Ganz & Co. in Budapest . There they had to overcome gradients of up to 39 ‰ on the 12.3 km long route, whereby they had to reach a speed of 11 km / h with two sidecars.

The railcars were developed in close cooperation with Orenstein & Koppel and were designated A 02 601 and 602 by the Waldbahn . Several sidecars of similar design were procured with the railcars. Originally the maximum speed of the railcars was 30 km / h, with the four-speed gearbox the top speeds of the individual gears were 10.7, 16.9 and 25.6 km / h. For economic reasons, the drive motors were exchanged for diesel motors from Ganz in 1940. The vehicles got a new gearbox and the speed was increased to 45 km / h.

When operations on the Budapest Children's Railway opened around 1950, both railcars were transferred there on loan, but returned to the Lillafüred Forest Railway after a few years. There they continued their service with annual mileages of around 20,000 km until the A 02 601 was retired in 1977 and scrapped in 1980. The A 02 602 came back to the Budapest Children's Railway with the sidecar, and the railcar was given the current name ABamot . After a thorough overhaul, the railcar was refurbished until 1991 and is now in use for nostalgic trains.

technical features

The car body of the vehicle consists of riveted steel profiles in a skeleton construction, which holds the outer sheet metal and the roof panels. One of the bogies, which are sprung from the car body with leaf springs, is the drive bogie, the other is the running bogie. The interior of the car was luxurious. The railcar has a 1st class compartment  with twelve seats and a 2nd class compartment with 28 seats. The 1st class seats are covered with plush , the 2nd class seats are in the wood class. Brass grab bars are also part of the equipment, as are luggage nets. The floor of the interior is made of pine wood with a thickness of 30 mm, which is covered with linoleum . The walls are covered with multilayer plywood. Between the two compartments there is a space with a toilet.

The machinery was taken over from the corresponding standard gauge railcars and hung on the undercarriage of the vehicle. The output of the original diesel engine was 66 kW at 1,400 min −1 . The Ganz-Jendrassik VI JaR 135 engine, newly installed in 1940 , had an output of 88 kW. A mechanical four-speed gearbox from the Ganz railcar range was used as power transmission, in which the transmission wheels were constantly in mesh. The engine protrudes into the interior of the 2nd class compartment. A longitudinal bench is located in the middle of the passenger compartment above the bonnet. The gearbox is completely underfloor. The inner axle of the next bogie is driven by it via a cardan shaft, the other axle of the bogie is driven via a through drive. In 1991, when it was put back into operation as a museum vehicle, a new D2156 HM6 engine from Raba, like the one used in the Ikarus 200 series buses, was installed. This engine has an output of 147 kW at 2200 rpm.

The vehicle's cooling system is placed on the end of the vehicle roof, and the connecting lines between the engine and radiator are used to heat the vehicle in winter. The vehicle has electrical equipment with 24 V voltage, the energy is provided by a Bosch generator with 500 W power or, when the engine is at a standstill, by a battery.
