László Hortobágyi

László Hortobágyi (* 1950 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian representative of world music .

Hortobágyi studied musicology and Indology and also worked as an organ builder in Hungary. Since 1967 he made several trips to northern India, where he studied traditional music and learned to play instruments such as tabla , sitar , rudra vina and surbahar .

In 1980 he founded the music society Gayan Uttejak Mandal , which he named after the society founded by Kaikhushro Kabraji in Mumbai in 1870 . Its best-known member was the musicologist Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande . The members of Hortobágyi's association devote themselves to the study, composition and performance of traditional music from the Arab and Indian regions. In 1984 he founded the Oriental Music Archives .

In addition to his work as a composer and performing musician, Hortobágyi wrote several musicological writings. He is a member of the computer music research project of the Institute of Musicology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences .

Hortobágyi's daughter Nóra Hortobágyi, born in 1988, plays in his Gāyan Uttejak Orchestra .
