The Lökbatan is a mud volcano in Azerbaijan .

The mud volcano is located on the south side of the Abşeron Peninsula near the coast of the Caspian Sea , about 3 km southwest of the settlement Lökbatan in the district (rayon) Qaradağ of Azerbaijan's capital Baku . This means that it lies on an oil field near the coast of the Caspian Sea.

history

The first documented eruption of the Lökbatan occurred in 1864. Since then, as of 2018, around 25 outbreaks have been recorded, the last one in May 2017. Igniting the methane released during an outbreak can lead to high columns of fire. The mud volcano is protected by the state as a natural monument of special importance. In 1998 he was included in the tentative list of Azerbaijan as a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage .
