The Löwenbrunnen is a fountain in Darmstadt .
History and description
The Löwenbrunnen was originally located in front of the Zum Goldenen Löwen restaurant at Große Ochsengasse 2 in Darmstadt. In 1897 the fountain was moved to the yard of the Victoria School . Today the lion fountain stands on the square at the city church .
The sculptor Franz Harres modeled the resting lion out of red sandstone in Rome in 1835 . The base of red sandstone with the water-spouting, metal lion heads probably comes from the sculptor Johann Baptist Scholl the Elder . In front of the base there are semicircular bowls on three sides to collect water.
