The lion fighter portal with relief above the tunnel mouth hole and flanking Romanesque columns (2009)

The lion fighter portal is an entrance or a so-called mouth hole to a blind tunnel a few meters long in travertine rocks from the late 18th century in the park on the Ilm in Weimar . The complex had to fulfill exclusively park design purposes. Further-reaching mining intentions were not associated with his facility. It is located below the Roman House .

The relief of the lion fighter above the portal comes from the Weimar court sculptor Johann Peter Kaufmann , who installed it on a portal surround by Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray in 1818/1819 . It shows the fight of Heracles with the Nemean lion .

The portal was made of red sandstone. The Romanesque capitals are spoils from the Thalbürgel monastery ruins .
